sharpened h-index (narrow)
A simple way of accounting for self-citations with respect to impact is to simply remove them from each publication's citation counts prior to calculating a metric. For the base calculation of the h-index this is known as the sharpened h-index (Schreiber 2007).
One complication is that there may be multiple methods for defining self-citations. In this case we use a narrow definition and only remove citations by the focal author to their own publications.
