yearly h-index

Properties

Description

The yearly h-index (Singh 2022) is described more or less incidentally when building up to another metric in the paper. It is simply the average h-index for a researcher based on calculations of h from sets of papers published from each individual year of their career, rather than a single h determined for the entire career. It is calculated as:

$$\bar{h}_y = \frac{\sum\limits_{i=Y_0}^{Y}h_i}{\text{academic age}},$$

where hi is simply an h-index calculated only for papers from year i. Regardless of citation counts, the yearly h- index will always be limited by the total number of papers published per year, thus highly cited papers and poorly cited papers will frequently contribute about equal weight in any given year. It serves more as a general measure of consistency and—assuming most papers get at least a few citations—is little different than the average number of papers published per year, at least for most individuals.
